A brief description of the laboratory:
(from the brochure given by the laboratory)
"
AIRO's Acoustics Laboratory was opened in 1959 as the first purpose built
commercial testing station to be operated in the United Kingdom. The laboratory
facilities are ideally suited to obtaining reliable acoustical test data
under controlled conditions, for a variety of applications. AIRO is free
from associations with manufacturing interests in noise control products,
and our reports and test certificates are widely accepted as authoritative.
With a wealth of testing experience available, our laboratory staff will
be pleased to discuss potential clients' requirements for measurements.
Some of the more popular tests are described overleaf; enquires about these
or other measurement specifications are welcomed.
AIRBORNE SOUND INSULATION. This test provides detailed information on the sound level difference provided by building elements such as facades, floors, partitions, doors and windows which are important to reduce the transfer of sound into and within buildings. The test procedure involves erecting the sample in an aperture between two purpose designed semi-reverberant chambers, which are mechanically isolated from each other in order to minimize any influence of flanking transmission. High sound levels are generated via loudspeakers in the source chamber and the resulting sound insulation between the source and receiving chambers is measured using a standard procedure, and the results are normalized to a reference condition according to the measured reverberation times in the receiving chamber. AIRO's laboratory offers several sound transmission test suites; three horizontal suites are available for walls and related building elements, whilst a vertical transmission suite enables floor and roof constructions to be evaluated. Tests are carried out to BS 2750/ISO 140 Part 3 and BS 5821/ISO 717 Parts 1 & 3, as well as to other national or commercial Standards. "
