In recent years, important aspects of human history and prehistory have
been reconstructed through the analysis of genetic variation. Studies
of genetic diversity are also providing elements useful for a deeper understanding
of the origin and evolution of many pathological traits. Recent technical
developments, in particular those that may soon permit rapid and inexpensive
typing of many genes, will probably give further impulse to the study of
human DNA polymorphisms. At this stage, therefore, it seems useful
to discuss the state of the art, and to compare different viewpoints.
Themes of particular interest are the possibility of recombination in the
mitochondrial genome, the meaning and the implications of allele genealogies,
and the best methods to estimate ages of alleles and mutation rates.f |
